Causes of Peri-Implantitis

Lack Of Good Home Care

As with natural teeth, daily brushing and flossing are recommended to disrupt the collection of bacteria in our mouths. Unlike teeth, dental implants do not decay. They are made of titanium and are nearly indestructible. However, the supporting gum and bone tissue need to be healthy to keep your dental implants anchored to the bone. When bacteria is left to irritate the gum tissue, your risk of peri-implantitis drastically increases.

Compromised Immune System

Certain illnesses such as cancer or diabetes can lower your body’s immune response system. These illnesses affect the whole body including your mouth. Medications used to treat certain illnesses can also affect your immune system, putting you at risk for developing peri-implantitis.

Symptoms of Peri-Implantitis

Why You Don’t Want Same Day Implants

Do you want same day dental implants in Dallas or Ft. Worth? Have you heard about things like “teeth in a day,” where you can get an entire full mouth tooth replacement in just one dental appointment? Tread cautiously before you invest in something that seems like it’s too good to be true.

The truth is, there are many misconceptions and untold truths about same day dental implants. It isn’t physically possible to take something that normally requires a matter of months and rush through it in one visit and still expect the same results.

Can you replace all your missing teeth in a day? Yes. But you won’t have a permanent prosthesis like an All-on-4 on the same date as your implant installation. There’s still a matter of integration and healing you need to allow for.

Same Day Implants vs. Temporary Healing Appliances

Each dental implant must have adequate time to integrate with your jaw for at least 3-4 months after it’s installed. Integration occurs when the implant is placed inside the bone and new bone cells grow and fuse around it. Your implant will become a permanent part of your mouth once it’s fully integrated. But if biting pressure is applied to it on the same day, the implant will likely fail.

This is where special considerations are made regarding teeth in a day. Let’s suppose you have your dental implants placed and an appliance attached at the same time. Yes, you will be able to have new teeth within a matter of hours, but not quite in the way you might have thought.

The same-day dental appliance you receive on the date of your implant installation is actually what we call a healing prosthesis or interim restoration. It will be worn over your dental implants for 3-4 months or longer until each of your implants is fully integrated with the bone.

A temporary healing prosthesis allows you to smile confidently and enjoy your meals while your implants are integrating. Your immediate appliance will only be worn for a brief time and is made of less durable materials, such as acrylic. These devices don’t last nearly as long as zirconia implants, as they’re only for short-term use.

People who get same day implants may later learn they’re stuck with an interim restoration or have hidden costs associated with a permanent prosthesis several months down the road. If it sounds too good to be true, start asking questions.

Why is a Final Hybrid Prosthesis Required?

The contours and curves of your bone and gums will change slightly during the healing and integration process of your new dental implants. These changes can and will cause fit problems with your healing appliance. But that’s completely normal! Since we replace it with the permanent version after integration is complete, the fit won’t be a permanent concern.

When you get dental implants at ARCHPOINT, you won’t leave our DFW office with visibly missing teeth while your implants integrate. Even if the permanent version of your smile isn’t installed yet, you will always have something temporarily there to see, smile, and eat with.

For your permanent implant restoration, we prefer to use a durable, higher-quality material that is both strong and attractive. Zirconia is the best choice in most scenarios. Zirconia is very durable and attractive, making it ideal for single, multiple, or full-arch tooth replacement (including All-on-4 dental implants.) However, it shouldn’t be installed on the same date as your dental implant surgery. Otherwise, you’re setting yourself up for unnecessary costs and re-treatments. We’ll wait until your implants are stable before installing the zirconia appliances on top of them.

When the acrylic healing prosthesis is replaced with the permanent zirconia one, you have much more freedom to design the “perfect” smile. Such as the size and color of each tooth, the contour of your biting edges, and how they complement your smile as a whole. And they’ll be just as strong as you need to enjoy all of your favorite foods. You could say once the process is complete, it’s like having a brand-new, natural smile all over again. But it takes time, and the process can’t be rushed!

Many dentists claim to offer teeth in a day or same day implants. But in the majority of these situations, the dentists only offer temporary healing prostheses made of acrylic. They may not disclose the fact that your restoration will need to be replaced or updated within the next few months after your surgery. But the weight of your appliance—whether it’s dentures or dental implants—can factor into your everyday comfort, eating, and speaking abilities.

Durable Zirconia vs. Other Dental Implant Materials

Zirconia is an extremely strong, durable, and biocompatible material that we prefer to use in dental implant cases whenever possible. But you might see some other dental providers talking about things like nanoceramics, which tend to be even lighter than zirconia dental implants. The theory behind the nanoceramics is that they are practically invincible, to the point you can drop them off of buildings or run over them with cars.

In reality, the difference between zirconia and nanoceramics is only a few ounces. For example, if you had dental fillings in every tooth, there would still be a weight difference, but you really wouldn’t notice it. The same can be said for nanoceramics vs. zirconia.

The overall shape of zirconia dental implants tends to be much more streamlined than something like a nanoceramic overdenture or hybrid arch. That means when you’re eating, you still have the full strength of a complete set of teeth, even though the entire arch is replaced with an implant prosthesis.

Is Zirconia Durable Enough to Eat With?

Yes, biting pressure is some of the strongest muscular forces you have in your body, but it’s still no match for zirconia implant restorations. Zirconia also offers what we call a “flexural strength,” which is how much biting pressure you can apply to your implants before they have the potential to break. Zirconia offers the best flexural strength of any other restorative material, including things like nanoceramics and acrylic (which you frequently see used in dentures or partials.)

As an implant patient, you’ll notice a huge improvement if you’re upgrading from something like acrylic dentures to an All-on-4 appliance, for example. Dentures don’t offer nearly as much flexibility when it comes to biting pressure and chewing forces, so naturally, you’re more likely to eat softer, processed foods or need to cut your meals up into smaller bites.

That means you can bite directly into a steak, corn on the cob, or even chew a piece of sugar-free gum if you want to. Traditional implants are the most commonly used implant design to replace missing teeth. They’ve been in use since the late 1960’s. The implant specialists of ARCHPOINT are experts at placing traditional implants to give you the smile you always wanted. This type of implant can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or an entire arch of teeth.

A traditional implant is a screw like post made of the highest quality titanium that is surgically placed into the bone structure and allowed to heal for about 3 months. Once the implant is fully integrated into the bone, a custom made crown is then placed onto the implant, resulting in a natural looking and feeling replacement tooth that is able to withstand heavy bite forces.

With the use of implant retained dentures or the innovative All-on-4 system, an entire arch of teeth can be replaced with the use of as few as four implants.

As with any surgical dental procedure, not all individuals are candidates for traditional implants. A substantial amount of bone tissue is required to support a traditional implant. Oftentimes, when teeth have been missing a long time and bone resorption has occurred, bone-grafting is necessary. This is an additional procedure that will increase not only the cost of replacing the teeth but also the total amount of time to complete treatment. Bone grafts can take up to 3-6 months to fully heal prior to implant placement.

A sinus lift is also a common procedure necessary before the placement of implants. The sinus cavity is located just above the maxillary bone of the upper jaw. When the maxillary bone resorbs, the sinus cavity often widens into that space. Zygomatic implants were developed in the late 1990’s and provide an alternative for patients that are not candidates for traditional implants. The term zygomatic refers to the zygoma bone, also known as your cheekbone. Zygomatic implants are anchored into the cheekbone rather than the jaw bone. Because the cheekbone is utilized, these implants are only available for replacing teeth in the upper jaw (maxilla.) The zygoma bone structure is much denser and does not resorb due to missing teeth, making it a perfect to solution to thinning jaw bone.

Zygomatic implants are significantly longer and are often placed at more of an angle than traditional implants making them very strong. These implants can be utilized to support a single tooth replacement crown, multiple tooth bridges or an entire arch of teeth. Zygomatic implants can also be used in combination with traditional implants depending on a patients unique needs.

If you’re looking to replace missing teeth, there are two main alternatives to traditional dentures: implant-stabilized overdentures (also called “snap-on” or “clip-in” dentures) and All-on-4 dental implants. Both of these approaches involve placing dental implants in your mouth, but that’s where the similarity stops. Here’s what you need to know about each of these approaches to tooth replacement so you can make an informed decision about your own treatment plan.

Overview: Two Types of Tooth Replacement

When it comes to a snap-on overdenture, the principle behind this solution is simple: snap-on dentures fit over your gums (assuming all teeth in that arch are missing) and attach on top of dental implants to keep them in place. Anywhere between 2-4 implants are usually used. The restoration looks like a traditional denture, except there are special “locators” under the base. Each of these locators has a corresponding dental implant inside of your mouth, which it attaches onto whenever you put it into place. And as you might guess, snap-on overdentures are still removable. You won’t sleep in them at night and you need to take them out to clean them properly.

All-on-4 dental implants are permanent. There’s nothing to remove or snap into place. Once they’re there, they’re there for good. The hybrid device is more streamlined in shape, so you get a more discreet and comfortable prosthesis that follows the contour of your jaw. Plus, an All-on-4 is more cost-effective than placing a dental implant in every single location of each missing tooth.

Removable vs. Non-Removable: Which Option is Better for Me?

There are several advantages to a snap-on overdenture, including: reduced irritation to your gum tissues and better stability whenever you’re talking or eating. Most patients also report that their bite feels more secure after getting an overdenture compared to when they wore dentures. But overdentures are meant to remove, so if you have any reason why that might not be right for you, All-on-4 treatments are a better choice.
